“If one could sum up the evolution of the North American freight car, it might be ‘bigger is better.’” That’s the opening salvo in “How Heavy Can Freight Cars Get?” an examination of the stunning growth in heavy axle load traffic and, more significantly, the effects of this traffic on track components. This article, reprinted here courtesy of TRAINS, also examines the work that has been done at the Transportation Technology Center, Inc., and on mainline railroads to mitigate the daunting effects of operating the industry-standard 286,000-pound cars in revenue service and the 315,000-pound cars on the HAL test train on the high-tonnage loop at the TTCI.
